By the time he's read the title the 9 months will be up!

If he thinks no one has ever been through it before, treat him to Andrew Cullen's amusing read, "From Here to Paternity". A sense of humour has to be a key requirement for getting through the first year of parenthood, so a few laughs now won't go amiss!

We found "What to Expect: The First Year" invaluable, and read each month avidly. And then hardly read any of "What to Expect: The Toddler Years", as you'll probably have relaxed into it by then. So buy the first one for those anxious first few months, and the second one only if you have a door needs propping open.

Forget all the fantasies you used to have, we guarantee, unless you are very lucky, that unbroken sleep will become one of them. Different babies need different things, and you'll have to choose who has the best advice. Sorry, not easy. We hear good things about the Baby Whisperer, and it sounds much more gentle than some methods!

If he's the ambitious type, he might like "Fun Start", which reckons to give you an idea a week to ensure that your baby has the best start in life, and maximises his or her potential. You may just like to break it to him now though that no matter how talented, it's unlikely your baby is going to take gold in the 100m at the 2012 Olympics. Unless burping is introduced.

Janey shares her secrets and tips for all of you to live holistically whilst still retaining your sanity. Do your bit for the planet, how ever imperfectly. As someone else says, every little helps! 

By 2010, it is expected half of all families will be stepfamilies, and it needs recognising that this is an important, and exciting step, with its own joys and troubles. We thought, having had some experience, that this was a really well written book on something we don't hear a lot about, but which a lot of people are facing. New stepdads, and mums, deserve some good support too!

We know the jury is still out on TV for babies, but if you want them to have something stimulating then the Baby Einstein range is fantastic. We quite fancy Baby Van Gogh ourselves, apparently a romp through the basic colours of the spectrum, hosted by Vincent Van Goat. Sounds just the thing for after a hard at the office. Just remember it's for baby!

If he's worried that his singing voice might not be up to the job, then he might like this combined nightlight and music player. It can soothe baby, and Dad, with sounds from nature, or a medley of lullabies. The soft glow of the nightlight might help to prevent night-time stubbed toes when he needs to check on baby.

Taking Baby Einstein a step further from watching and listening, baby can now swing with Einstein. So to speak. This is the sort of things Dads, as well as babies love. It's got speed (six different ones), sounds, flashing lights, dangly things...just remind Dad he really is too big for this!
